Diagnosis and treatment of elbow disorders in the overhead athlete.

Abstract

Evaluation of the overhead athlete with elbow pain represents a diagnostic challenge for the clinician. Accurate diagnosis depends on a thorough understanding of the types of injuries typically found in the overhead athlete as well as a working knowledge of the anatomy of the elbow. An accurate, [figure: see text] focused history and physical examination, combined with appropriate imaging studies will lead to the correct diagnosis. Appropriate treatment may then be rendered with the goal of returning the athlete to participation.
