Abstract
Nonvascularized autogenous bone grafts have been used for at least 150 years. Vascularized bone grafts were first done only 17 years ago. We now know that bone grafts act through osteoconductive and osteoinductive mechanisms to produce new bone. Autogenous bone grafts remain the gold standard against which allografts and artificial graft materials should be measured.
