Smith-Petersen osteotomy in thoracolumbar deformity surgery.

Abstract

To describe the technique and indications of a Smith-Petersen osteotomy in spinal deformity surgery. Pertinent literature was reviewed to describe the indications and reported complications of this corrective technique. The operative nuances of the technique are described. A Smith-Petersen osteotomy is a safe and effective surgical technique to obtain correction of spinal deformity in both the sagittal and coronal planes.
