Acute kidney injury in sepsis: questions answered, but others remain.

Abstract

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious complication of sepsis in the intensive care setting, with associated increases in the likelihood of death, prolonged hospital stay, and increased costs of care. Increased risk of developing AKI has now been recognized for patients admitted with sepsis and community-acquired pneumonia. Chronic kidney disease appears to increase the risk of developing AKI, while short- and long-term mortality risks were associated with the absolute increase in serum creatinine during hospitalization.
