Augmentation of the upper lip with temporalis fascia: a quantitative analysis.

Abstract

Lip augmentation is a very common cosmetic procedure. A wide variety of materials have been used to enhance and contour the lips, including alloplastic and autogenous substances. The authors describe their experience with augmentation of the upper lip using an autologous graft from the temporalis fascia. Patients were enrolled prospectively. Upper-lip projection and vermilion show were measured preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively for 19 patients who were candidates for lip augmentation with temporalis fascia. Six months postoperatively, the mean values for upper-lip projection and lip vermilion were significantly greater than preoperative measurements. Augmentation of the upper lip with temporalis fascia appears to be safe and effective.
