Ultrasound of the thigh: focal, compartmental, or comprehensive examination?

Abstract

Ultrasound of the thigh presents unique challenges because of the size and length of multiple structures, including tendons, muscles, nerves, and vessels. Those performing ultrasound can use a focal approach, a comprehensive approach, or a compartmental and flexible approach. This article illustrates and summarizes our approach to ultrasound of the thigh, including unique anatomy, artifacts, and common abnormalities, with an emphasis on the advantages of performing a compartment-based and flexible ultrasound examination.
