Abstract
Both ASR hip resurfacings and stemmed ASR XL arthroplasties have failed at high rates in several published series. We assessed a single surgeon series of these arthroplasties looking to identify factors associated with their failure. All surgeries were performed by one surgeon. Patients were evaluated clinically, radiologically and with serial cobalt and chromium ion analysis. 274 implants were analysed - 152 ASR resurfacings and 122 ASR XL implants. Thirty revisions were performed. The failure rate of the ASR implant in our series is unacceptably high - its use in routine hip arthroplasty cannot be supported.
