Editorial Commentary: Stem Cell Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis: Holy Grail or Tin Cup?

Abstract

Osteoarthritis of the knee is extremely common and a growing source of disability. The current nonarthroplasty treatment options have afforded only limited benefit, and recently stem cell treatment has emerged as the newest minimally invasive option with great societal demand. While the demand is great, the evidence is limited. Stem cell use appears to be safe, but further good-quality research is needed to be able to routinely recommend this option for knee osteoarthritis treatment.
