Abstract
The pathogens and susceptibility profiles of deep SSIs following growth friendly surgery for children with non-idiopathic scoliosis were assessed to optimize perioperative prophylaxis. Gram positive cocci were detected in 90.1% of SSIs; susceptibility to cefazolin and vancomycin remained unchanged. Gram negative rods (GNR) were detected in 16.5% of SSIs; susceptibility to cefazolin decreased but susceptibility to aminoglycosides increased. Aminoglycosides play a critical role in GNR coverage and should be incorporated into prophylaxis protocols.
