Abstract
Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is defined as increased pressure within a confined compartmental space, leading to a decline in the perfusion pressure of the tissue within that compartment. To date, the commonly held belief has been that ACS was first described by Richard von Volkmann in 1881. However, we propose that ACS was originally described by Abul Qasim Al-Zahrawi approximately 900 years earlier.
