Abstract
A recent study<sup>1</sup> demonstrates how hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) contribute minimally to blood and immune cell production during development and only become active postnatally. The work also reveals how Mecom expression can be used to distinguish rare HSCs from the more abundant progenitors that arise to maintain embryonic hematopoiesis.
