Evaluation of an Online Training Course in Motivational Interviewing for Occupational Health Clinicians to Address Vaccine Hesitancy.

Abstract

To develop an asynchronous online training on using motivational interviewing (MI) to address vaccine hesitancy in occupational health settings and evaluate learner performance. We developed a 2-hour online course featuring interactive exercises and simulated dialogue scenarios about vaccine hesitancy and recruited US-based occupational health clinicians (OHCs) via Listservs. We measured MI knowledge, confidence, and skills at baseline, posttraining, and 3 months later, using an instrument adapted from existing validated tools. Of 71 OHC enrollees, 62 started the training, and 55 completed all evaluation questionnaires. Learners demonstrated significant increases in overall evaluation score (11.4% increase, 95% confidence interval, 9.9% to 13.8%) and domain-specific scores. Learners rated the training highly on acceptability measures. This brief asynchronous online training on using MI to address vaccine hesitancy was effective in improving OHC MI knowledge, skills, and confidence.
