Abstract
The intestinal secretory lineage is thought to comprise four distinct cell types derived from one Atoh1<sup>+</sup> progenitor, but the mechanisms that distinguish Paneth and goblet cells are unclear. Bhattacharya et al.<sup>1</sup> argue that these cells are instead phenotypic manifestations of a common terminal Atoh1<sup>+</sup> cell, actively shaped by niche-derived signals.
