FDG PET/CT in Stercoral Colitis.

Abstract

Stercoral colitis is a rare inflammatory colitis caused by the accumulation of impacted fecal material. Left untreated, stercoral colitis can progress to fatal complications including ischemic necrosis, ulceration and perforation of the bowel, peritonitis, septic shock, and even death. We describe FDG PET/CT findings of stercoral colitis in the rectum incidentally found on FDG PET/CT in staging a patient with suspected renal cell carcinoma. FDG PET/CT showed fecal impaction in the dilated rectum, asymmetrical rectal wall thickening, perirectal fat stranding, and diffusely inhomogeneous activity of the rectal wall and perirectal edematous areas.
