Abstract
Superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) or superficial thrombophlebitis are interchangeable terms that describe a common clinical entity, characterized by inflammation and thrombosis of the superficial veins. The majority of cases involve the lower extremity, specifically the great saphenous vein (60%-80%) with or without the involvement of its associated tributaries. About 5% of cases present with bilateral SVT. The diagnosis of SVT confers a 5-year risk of developing a DVT or PE 5-fold higher than the general population, with the highest risk within the first 3 months of diagnosis.
