Proximal Humerus and Scapular Fractures after Gunshot Injury.

Abstract

Ballistic fractures to the scapula and proximal humerus are uncommon injuries without a significant body of literature to guide treatment. Ballistic scapular fracture indications do not significantly differ from nonballistic injuries, nor do general surgical approaches or tactics. In contrast, ballistic proximal humerus fractures are often quite distinct from typical low-energy injuries in terms of patient age, bone quality, fracture pattern and comminution, and bone loss. Multiple treatment options exist, and selecting the appropriate one depends on patient, fracture, and surgeon factors.
