Hair and Nail Pathology in Primary Care.

Abstract

Hair and nail complaints are common in the primary care clinic. Although not a comprehensive assessment of all conditions, this article addresses the most common hair and nail pathologies seen in primary care clinics. It discusses physiologic explanations for pathology to provide clinicians with a framework for narrowing their differential diagnosis. It also provides guidance for identifying significant pathology that would best be served through referrals to specialist providers.
