Abstract

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), with their osteoinductive properties, present a potential alternative, but their safety and efficacy are still debated. This study seeks to understand BMPs research in orthopedics through bibliometric analysis, assessing the current state and identifying research trends and frontiers. A literature search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection database for English-language articles pertaining to BMPs and orthopedic themes from January 1, 1900, to November 1, 2024. Bibliometric parameter extraction, CiteSpace, Microsoft Excel were employed for data processing and network visualization analysis. This study included a total of 1048 articles, demonstrating sustained research activity in BMPs applications in orthopedics over the past 32 years. In this domain, Takaoka Kunio was identified as the most prolific author. The United States was the most productive country, with the University of California System emerging as the leading institution. The Journal of Orthopaedic Research and Science were recognized as the most productive and frequently cited journals, respectively. Keyword analysis highlighted research hotspots, including the application of BMPs in spinal fusion surgery, bone tissue engineering, and gene therapy. Studies concerning BMP-induced differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and the development of BMPs carrier and delivery systems are considered the frontiers of this field. The study offers a comprehensive overview of the current state and development trends of BMPs applications in orthopedics, encompassing countries, institutions, authors, journals, research hotspots, and frontier areas, providing directional guidance and research insights for subsequent studies in BMPs applications in orthopedics.
