Abstract

As subspecialization becomes increasingly common in neurology, the field risks losing its core professional identity. This viewpoint introduces the concept of a "core neurologist identity," emphasizing the importance of preserving a shared foundation in clinical reasoning, diagnostic methodology, and patient care. We explore how identity fragmentation affects training, medical education, advocacy, and interdisciplinary care. Subspecialization should deepen, not replace, neurologic identity. Reaffirming that all subspecialists are neurologists at their core is essential to maintaining coherence in the discipline and ensuring that patients receive integrated, expert care, beginning with how we train the next generation.
