Abstract
The loss of teeth and the subsequent lack of replacement can lead to several health issues. The necessity of dental practitioners to know the prosthetic status and needs of patients is paramount to combat the perils associated with edentulism. To investigate the prosthetic status and need of patients in Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia, in relation to gender and age. The study was carried out in several dental care centers across Riyadh city. A total of 618 subjects aged 35-74 years were selected, demographic data collected, and a clinical examination carried out to assess their prosthetic status and needs. Data were analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25, by subjecting it to Chi-square and cross-tabulation. The lack of prosthesis was seen in 65.5% of participants for the maxillary arch and 69.6% for the lower arch. The requirement for a prosthesis was seen in 51.8% of the patients for the upper arch and 29.9% for the lower arch. Age played a significant role in prosthetic status and need, while gender was seen to be statistically insignificant. The majority of the examined adults had a prosthetic need of some or other forms of prosthesis, although their prosthetic status was low. There is a positive correlation between age and prosthetic status and need.
