Making an impact: Reflections from the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons presidential address.

Abstract

How can we as surgeons make an impact? Impact is created when we align professional choices with personal values. Academic surgery amplifies impact through 3 missions: patient care, research, and education. Research allows us to answer patient-driven questions and disseminate findings to improve global practice. Education, particularly fellowship training, generates a multiplier effect as successive generations expand the reach of our field. Organizational service within national organizations fosters collaboration and advances care beyond the capacity of any one surgeon. Key lessons include prioritizing quality over quantity, embracing collaboration, and defining success through personal values. The American Association of Endocrine Surgeons strengthens impact through initiatives in education, research, and engagement. By focusing on incremental improvements and harnessing collective strengths, we can ensure a bright future for endocrine surgery.
