Preoperative Radiation Therapy in Locally Advanced Breast Cancer: A Narrative Review.

Abstract

Locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) is a clinically challenging form of BC, requiring a multidisciplinary approach and multimodal therapeutic considerations. The role of radiation therapy (RT) in LABC remains a source of debate, with recent interest in the use of radiation in the preoperative setting. Outcomes of neoadjuvant RT have been encouraging, with potential benefits in both clinical and cosmetic outcomes. Here we present a narrative review of preoperative RT in LABC, with an emphasis on clinical considerations, the interplay of chemotherapeutic agents, and the role of neoadjuvant RT in breast reconstruction.
