The Mohs advancing and improving quality (MohsAIQ) national database registry: A new database of Mohs surgery cases performed in the United States.

Abstract

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is increasingly used to treat cutaneous malignancies. However, there is no national registry of MMS cases. To develop, build, and assess Mohs Advancing and Improving Quality (MohsAIQ), a national data registry of MMS cases. From 2018 to 2023, Mohs surgeons entered information on their cases, including patient/surgeon demographics, tumor characteristics, medications, and surgical metrics. Data quality assessment was performed from 2023 to 2025. Patient demographics and tumor characteristics in the final MohsAIQ dataset were compared to those of other large skin cancer databases. MohsAIQ contains 267,524 tumors from 185,740 patients treated by 151 Mohs surgeons from 120 practices between 2018 and 2023. The database includes 159,182 (59.5%) basal cell carcinomas, 103,845 (38.8%) squamous cell carcinomas, 2362 (0.9%) melanomas, and 1475 (0.6%) rare tumors. The predominance of male patients (62.4%) and the patient age distribution (median age between 71 and 75 years) are consistent with those of other large databases. The MohsAIQ registry also includes details on Mohs surgery (eg, number of stages, use of immunohistochemistry, defect size) and repairs (type and dimension). MohsAIQ does not include information on complications or outcomes. The MohsAIQ national registry contains details on 267,524 MMS cases. These data can advance research on MMS.
