Patient Perspective: Words That Matter: Reflections on a Patient's Experiences With Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

Abstract

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy. When severe, GBS can result in near-total paralysis and respiratory failure. Psychological symptoms are common but under-recognized complications of GBS and may develop because of physical disability and social isolation. In this article, we share the patient's perspective of the psychological effects of GBS and how words of encouragement, a listening ear, communication aids, and dedicated caregiving made the difference in the patient's physical and emotional recovery.
