Future Directions in Müller-Weiss Disease Whither the Way Forward?

Abstract

Müller-Weiss disease requires raised awareness among the wider medical community including radiologists, our front-line diagnosticians. The terms bipartite navicular and Brailsford's osteochondritis refer to end-stage V disease and should be discontinued. Geographic differences in disease pattern exist. Since the heel is not always in varus, the term 'paradoxic pes planovarus' should be restricted. Ensure the heel is in varus before embarking on lateral displacement calcaneal osteotomy. The disease and treatment outcomes need reporting in standardized fashion, as per a combination of Wong groups and Maceira stages. Global collaboration may prove necessary to determine etiology and define gold standards of treatment.
