Automation and Workflow Efficiency in Clinical Settings: Implementing Automation to Reduce Administrative Burdens.

Abstract

Administrative tasks remain a leading contributor to physician burnout in primary care and hospital settings. Recent advancements in informatics infrastructure, including continued development and adoption of standards and interoperability, are helping enable greater workflow automation. Many clinical workflows can benefit from automation to improve efficiency-from prior authorizations and inbox management to scheduling, billing, and report generation. However, automating a workflow to gain value requires leveraging a strategic implementation strategy. This will be even more pertinent as a rapidly expanding artificial intelligence landscape can unlock a variety of additional workflows amenable to automation.
