Abstract
Perioperative management of patients with diabetes mellitus requires careful preoperative risk evaluation, day of surgery testing and treatment planning, and transition to postoperative diabetes regimen. Evaluation of glycated hemoglobin, risk factors for hypoglycemia, and carbohydrate loading in diabetic patients are reviewed. Consensus recommendations for perioperative blood glucose targets are summarized for both inpatient and ambulatory settings, accompanied by practical testing and treatment algorithms.
