Avoiding danger even when competing goals are imminent supports survival, yet the mechanisms orchestrating this behavioral override remain unclear. Macdonald and colleagues describe a thalamostriatal microcircuit that modulates terminal dopamine release, bypassing canonical midbrain dopamine circuitry to prioritize safety.
