Abstract

Effective clinical communication is foundational to health care delivery. Models of clinician-centered communication have evolved to patient-centered paradigms. This review highlights approaches that can further advance collaborative care by leveraging the REDE (Relationship, Establish, Develop, Engage) model of relationship-centered communication. Phase 1 involves establishing the relationship with empathy through the SAVE (Support, Acknowledge, Validate, Emotion name) framework. In phase 2, clinicians further develop a partnership with perspective using the VIEW (Vital Activities, Ideas, Expectations, Worries) approach, and in phase 3 clinician-patient partners engage iteratively using the ARIA (Assess, Reflect, Inform, Assess) tool. These communication skills can be used beyond the exam room to develop more robust, resilient, and safer clinical teams. By implementing the REDE model of relationship-centered communications, health care professionals can better provide the right care, at the right time, every time.
