Long-term outcomes of a cemented cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty: a 10-year follow-up study.

Abstract

This retrospective single-center study evaluated the long-term clinical follow-up and survival of one specific cemented total knee arthroplasty (TKA) system in a series of 288 patients (301 total knee arthroplasties) with follow-up moments at 5, 10 and 13.8 years. Patients with a mean follow-up of 13.8 ± 1.3 years were evaluated on implant survival, patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), and plain radiography signs. Patients with revision surgery were excluded from analysis; they were analyzed separately for time to revision and reason for revision. At 10 years improved functional outcome was observed within the remaining cohort consisting of 106 patients (36.8%). Linear mixed model analysis showed continued improvement between 5- and 10-years follow-up. At 13.8 yr 12 TKAs out of 301 had undergone revision surgery of one or more components resulting in an implant survival rate of 95.4%. 19 radiolucent lines on plain radiography were seen in 15 TKAs. This long-term FU study of the Vanguard total knee system shows good clinical outcomes on PROMs and excellent survival of the prosthesis with few adverse events. The vanguard total knee system can be considered a safe TKA design providing excellent longevity at 13-years follow up.
