<i>"A gradual erosion of hope":</i> a qualitative study on the experiences of individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the experiences of individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA), with a particular focus on their experiences of hope and health. This is a qualitative study conducted using a content analysis design. Fourteen individuals diagnosed with KOA were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews using a personal information form and a semi-structured interview guide. The data were analyzed using content analysis, and thematic categories were developed. Participants were between the ages of 53 and 79. The analysis revealed two main themes and six subthemes. The themes, along with their subthemes, were identified as <i>Fading Hope</i> (Noisy Knee, Uneven Journey, Erosion) and <i>Life Beyond the Knee</i> (Pain Trajectory, Balance Steering, Mental Wellness Threshold). The findings indicate that individuals with KOA face significant challenges due to joint deterioration and degeneration. Participants suggest that living with KOA can be associated with fluctuations in hope, potential shifts in overall health, and a broad relevance of the disease across various life dimensions. Pain often emerged as a significant aspect of their daily routine, while navigating the disease was frequently described as involving intentional effort. Additionally, many participants shared experiences related to psychosocial distress.
