A Community Health Worker-Led Model of Training and Technical Assistance to Support National Community Health Worker Program Implementation for COVID-19 Response: United States, 2021-2025.

Abstract

<b>Objectives.</b> To assess training and technical assistance (TTA) needs among 67 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded community health worker (CHW) programs in the United States and to assess the reach of a national CHW-led TTA program designed to meet the needs identified. <b>Methods.</b> From December 2021 through January 2022, we assessed TTA needs through an online survey and interviews with program staff. We used findings to inform TTA content and delivery. From 2021 through 2025, we collected participation data to assess program reach. <b>Results.</b> Among 59 survey respondents and representatives from 10 organizations, funding recipients identified hiring, program implementation, financial sustainability, and peer learning as priorities for TTA. Based on these findings, we developed webinars, communities of practice, leadership training, and individualized TTA. The program reached all funded recipients and generated 8824 participant encounters, 54.7% of whom were CHWs. <b>Conclusions.</b> Health departments implementing CHW programs demonstrated substantial demand for and engagement in CHW-led TTA. Policymakers should prioritize sustained investment in TTA infrastructure to support implementation and long-term sustainability of CHW programs.
