Surgical Care of the Traumatized Lower Extremity.

Abstract

After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Describe the principles of early and definitive management of lower extremity trauma and the importance of an evidence-based approach to these complex injuries. 2. List the benefits of a collaborative orthoplastic approach to decision-making and management in patients undergoing limb salvage. 3. Assess the need for formalized guidelines and treatment protocols to optimize the management of lower extremity trauma. Many open lower extremity fractures occur each year, and complications arising from suboptimal management impose substantial financial and functional burdens. An evidence-based approach emphasizing the timing and approach to soft-tissue reconstruction has been demonstrated to result in improved outcomes. A collaborative orthoplastic approach is critical to achieving this goal. The role of the reconstructive surgeon within this multidisciplinary team is central throughout the continuum of care, from initial hospital presentation to definitive soft-tissue coverage.
