A new method for rigid fixation of silicone implants.

Abstract

Augmentation of the facial skeletal contour can be done with either synthetic or organic material. Currently, silicone is one of the commonly used alloplastic implants for augmentation of facial contour. If the implant cannot be fixed sufficiently, it will be movable and may become malpositioned. An adequately placed subperiosteal implant is stable and does not require any additional fixation. However, it is not always possible to keep the periosteum intact, nor is it possible to close the periosteum over the implant. In these conditions, it also may be fixed by an internal suture to the periosteum or the surrounding soft tissue, or it may be fixed by external skin sutures that penetrate the implant and are tied over a bolus on the skin. For these reasons, I created a new method for fixation of silicone implants to the skull with rigid fixation using miniplates and screws.
