Abstract
This article sets out a plan for examining and managing pigmented lesions in general practice based on risk categories, history and appearance at x10 magnification. A family history of melanoma, sun exposure in the first 15 years of life, recent change and size above 7 mm should give concern. Benign lesions should not be removed from the "cape" area because of probable hypertrophic scarring.
